Signs of a failing system
- Sewage backing up into the basement
- Toilets and drains that gurgle or empty slowly even after pumping
- Surface pooling or a persistent smell over the bed
- A failed inspection during a home sale
Repair or replace
Many problems are repairable: a broken baffle, a collapsed pipe, a failed pump in a pumped system, or roots in the distribution lines. A bed that is saturated or has failed usually needs to be replaced, which is a larger project that includes a site evaluation, design and permit.

Questions about septic repair & installation
Do I need a permit to replace a septic system?
Yes. Septic systems are regulated under the Ontario Building Code, and new or replacement systems need a permit from your municipality. Your installer will normally apply for it.
